Meet Michael Aidala

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What's your name, where are you from?

My name is Michael Aidala but most people call me Mike. I am from Westchester County, NY.

What's a typical day like for you?

I am a big fan of variety and not the biggest fan of typical or strict routine. However, that being said, my days begin with a lot of water and some type of movement. That usually consists of an at home yoga/movement practice into my body after lying still for hopefully 8-10 hours followed by a run in the canyon behind my apartment with my dog or SUP surf session. I will then eat a small meal and head into the gym to train a few hard working clients. After a few sessions it’s time for my own workout.  I will then crush a huge lunch and hopefully have tired myself out enough to sit down at the computer to work on my remote coaching business. I will build programs, film exercises for clients and work on my brand MAST Method. 

What lead you to become a fitness professional? Can you tell us a bit about how you developed your personal brand?

Being an athlete my whole life what I love most is the off-season grind. I really enjoy working hard both physically and mentally and pushing through perceived limits and obstacles. I believe what we can learn to do in the gym will translate to all areas our life. This essentially makes us more resilient, stronger and happier human beings. 

My personal brand is a reflection of my past. I was very fortunate to work alongside some amazing coaches and train some phenomenal athletes over the years. Starting out as an intern in the NFL and then working for a company to train pro athletes in their off season it set the tone for how I view the body and it’s performance. Following those experiences I wanted to work with high-school and college athletes and I managed a performance facility in NY while competing in Olympic Weightlifting and SUP racing. After a few years at that facility I began to take a more holistic approach to health and fitness. It was no longer, how much weight could I lift or how fast could I go but instead how good could I feel and how could I help the people around me feel just as good. I traveled the world for a year studying what makes people happier and healthier. Everything from surfing in Costa Rica to fishing on Easter Island (Chile). I finished in the Austrian Alps working as a ski instructor and then came back to the states. The journey continued at home as I dove deep into a yoga practice and soon became a certified teacher. After yoga came hand balancing, partner acrobatics, gymnastics, calisthenics, parkour etc.  The journey still continues today. I don’t have all the answers but I strive to constantly have a beginners mindset. This wide eyed view on life keeps things fresh and exciting, I want things to be FUNcomfortable, it’s a big part of my training and brand. 

MAST stands for Mike Aidala Strength Training and having such a varied past allows me to reach people through a holistic movement approach to help them reach their goals. 

What gets you out of bed every morning?

My dog needing to go to the bathroom! She just won’t stop licking my face until I bring her out. All joking aside, what gets me jumping out of bed is possibility. I truly believe ANYTHING is possible if you put your mind to it and want it bad enough. The universe will conspire to help you, all you need to do is ask.

What's next?

What’s next for me is continuing to allow myself the opportunity to listen to what I want. I feel listening to what we truly want is a lost art in today’s society, we are constantly being told what we “should” want. I am also continuing to expand my remote coaching business, working with clients all over the world. As well as growing MAST personal retreats which are custom designed 3-4 day 1 on 1 retreats designed to make a lasting impact on health and lifestyle choices.
